1880 Born in MunchenGlebach near Dusseldorf, Germany
1885 Struggled with numerous childhood illnesses: asthma, rheumatic fever, and rickets
1895 Regained health through vigorous physical exercises and health studies
1912 Moved to London. Worked as a boxer, self-defense trainer, gymnast, and circus performer
1917 Interned as a German National during World War I. Worked as a hospital orderly on the Isle of Mann in the Moar Internment Camp. Developed
exercises using spring driven appratus for rehabilitation.
1919 Moved to Germany. Influenced movement theorist Rudolf Van Laban and dancer Mary Wigman. Trained Hamburg Military Police officers
1926 Moved to New York City
1927 Married Clara. She was a former kintergarten teacher.
1930 Joseph and Clara operated the Pilates Studio next to the New York Ballet Studio. Trained dancers such as George Ballanchine, Hanya Holm, Ruth St. Denis, Jerome Robbins, and Martha Graham.
1945 “Return to Life Through Contrology” published.
1950 Trained such persons as Ms. Moira Merrithew, cofounder of Stott Pilates, Romana Kryzanowska.
1967 Joseph Pilates died at the age 87. He died from injuries suffered in a fire.
1970 Clara Pilates joined with Romana Kryzanowska to promote “Pilates.”
